For most of the last ten years, a Southlake Friday in the fall ran on autopilot. You knew the head coach's name, you knew who owned the East lot on district nights, and you knew that at some point in October the schedule would deliver Euless Trinity and the traffic that came with it. None of those three things are true in 2026.
The 2026 Dragons schedule was announced on April 15 by the program, and it is the first slate in eight seasons that isn't Riley Dodge's. It opens outside the city, in a district that has been redrawn, under a head coach the community hasn't watched call a game yet. If you have been building your fall calendar off muscle memory, the muscle memory is out of date.
What actually changed on the sideline
Riley Dodge left the program in the offseason to take an assistant coaching position at SMU, and the Dragons promoted defensive coordinator Lee Munn, who had held that role for eight seasons, into the head job. That is a continuity hire in name, but it is still a transition. Every home opener under Dodge carried an implied answer to the question of what the offense would look like. This one doesn't.
Munn inherits a team that finished 2025 at 14-1 and is entering a restructured District 4-6A. The pressure is not the record. The pressure is that the community will read the first two or three games as evidence of what the Munn era is, whether or not two or three games can actually tell them.
The opener isn't at Dragon Stadium
The season kicks off Thursday, August 27, at 7 p.m. against Jenks (Oklahoma), and the game is being played at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. That matters for two reasons. First, it removes the usual "walk over from the neighborhood" option that a lot of Southlake households treat as the first Friday of fall. Second, it puts the debut of a new head coach in a stadium with the acoustics of a college bowl, which is a different opening statement than a home crowd of 11,000 on Kimball Avenue.
The road opener follows a week later. Carroll plays at North Crowley on September 4. Two straight games away from Dragon Stadium is a real thing to plan around if your household treats Dragon Fridays as a fixed anchor. The Munn-era home debut isn't until September 11.
Five home Fridays, read as a calendar
There are five home games on the schedule, and they are not evenly weighted. This is the read a resident should have:

The three road district games are at Keller Central (Sept 17), Byron Nelson (Oct 23), and Boswell (Nov 4) to close the regular season. If you have historically only attended home games, the November closer being on the road is the trap.
The district looks different without Euless Trinity
The UIL's latest realignment reshuffled the district and, most notably, removed Euless Trinity from the schedule. For anyone who has been attending games for more than five years, that is the single biggest change on this document. Trinity was the annual game that dictated traffic patterns, sold out the visiting side, and produced the parking-lot pressure that made the Dragon Zone passes worth it.
Without that fixture, the density of the fall shifts. Allen on September 11 and Keller on October 16 become the two nights that will feel closest to a district-final atmosphere from the parking lot in. If you have relatives who used to fly in for the Trinity game, the honest answer for 2026 is that Allen or Keller is now the equivalent evening.
How Dragon Stadium actually works on a Friday
The stadium rules haven't changed, but a lot of residents have stopped paying attention to them because they never had to. If you are attending your first game with an out-of-town guest, or bringing kids who have aged into their own tickets, these are the specifics that catch people:
- Tailgating is permitted in designated areas only, meaning the East lot and the perimeters of the parking lot.
- Private tailgates are permitted, but not for commercial or promotional purposes, and no school-sponsored tailgate parties or organized giveaways involving food and drink are allowed in the parking lot without prior CISD approval.
- Tailgaters are required to show a parking pass to enter the lot, and tailgates shut down promptly at 6:30 p.m. so that pass holders have somewhere to park.
- There is no outside food or drink, concessions are inside the stadium only, and Dragon Stadium is a no-re-entry venue, meaning if you leave, you don't come back in.
- Backpacks and large duffle bags aren't allowed, and only purses and tote bags are permitted, subject to search.
The overflow answer, when the lot sells out, is not to circle Kimball hoping for a spot. When a Dragon Stadium lot has gone parking-pass-only in the past, patrons without passes have been directed to park around the stadium or down Kimball at Dawson Middle School. The distance is walkable in normal weather, and it is a materially better plan than treating a sold-out district Friday as first-come parking.
The address is 1085 S. Kimball Avenue. Gates open ninety minutes before kickoff for most home games; the tailgate 6:30 shutdown is the operational deadline, not kickoff. If you have not been to Dragon Stadium since the pandemic, note that student seating expanded from one section to three in 2023, which has quietly changed where families with high schoolers actually end up sitting.
A four-week plan for the rest of August
The month is short and the opener is on a Thursday, not a Friday, which is easy to miss. Working backward from August 27:
- This week: decide whether you are driving to Fair Park for the Jenks game or watching from home. Tickets for the Cotton Bowl opener are a separate purchase from the Dragon Stadium season package, and the drive from Southlake is not a 15-minute proposition on a weeknight.
- Next week: if you want a parking pass for the September 11 Allen home opener, buy it now. Allen games at Dragon Stadium historically move fast on the parking side, and this one carries the added weight of being Munn's home debut.
- Two weeks out: brief anyone in the household who hasn't attended a game since 2023 on the clear-bag policy and the no-re-entry rule. Both catch families with middle-schoolers off guard.
- Game week: if the forecast is above 95, arrive earlier, not later. The East lot fills for tailgating well before the 6:30 shutdown on marquee nights, and the walk from Dawson is longer in August heat than in October.
The read for a resident
The through-line of the 2026 season is that almost every default assumption a Southlake household has about Dragon football is being tested at once. New head coach. New district shape. An opener that isn't at home, isn't on a Friday, and isn't within city limits. A traditional rival off the schedule and two other opponents, Allen and Keller, quietly moving into the role Trinity used to play.
None of that changes what Dragon Nation means on a Friday night. It does change what a resident should put in their phone in August, and it changes which two or three home games are the ones that are actually worth the pass, the tailgate slot, and the early arrival. Treat this as a rebuild year for the calendar, not just the roster, and the fall gets easier to plan.
